Three Wheeled Buggies
If you're seeking a buggy to run with or just a stroller that can be used for strolls around the neighborhood, three-wheeled buggies offer great mobility. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver even in tight spots.
If you are looking for an easy ride in your pram, choose models with 360deg front wheels with swivel. They are prone, however, to punctures. Make sure you have an emergency repair kit.
Frame made of sturdy material
New figures show that the three-wheeled buggies, the symbol of the noughties that had more money than common sense, are in steep decline. They have been replaced by four-wheelers that can handle a wider range of terrain, while still looking elegant and easy to push.
The larger the wheels are, the better your buggy will cope with bumpy surfaces and uneven pavements. The larger wheels, both front and rear allow you to move and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy with a newborn as well as a 3 year old and found it was able to withstand grass, cobbles rough roads, dirt tracks, and kerbs. Kath said it felt solid to push and very solid on difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable so need periodic pumping) offer built-in suspension, which was very comfortable for my kids.
The size and shape of the seat is another thing to consider. You want the seat to be large enough for your child to feel comfortable and to allow them to lie down. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of lying flat, which lets your child face you, while others only permit a parent-facing option.
A great choice for tackling off-road and muddy trails is the Roma Atlas. The buggy can be used as a one-person unit from the beginning and can be modified to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for babies and toddlers up to age four and includes a bumper bar, raincover, a better 5-point harness and a spacious cushioned seat unit. Storage options are also a plus with a large basket and zip pockets on the hood, and a handy pouch at the rear of seat unit.
Wheels with a larger diameter
Larger wheels mean that your buggy will be more stable on rough terrain - perfect for buggies designed for off-road use. In pushchair 3 wheels , they allow you to maneuver the pushchair through narrow spaces. Some three-wheeled buggies feature rotating wheels on the front, which help you navigate tight corners. Others are designed to run and have fixed wheels that lock for increased speed and stability. This also helps in the event that you hit an unintentional tree root or road, as the front wheel will rise up a bit to prevent you from hitting it.
A majority of 3 wheel pushchairs come with air-filled tyres. This means they can be used on a variety of terrains and are more flexible than four wheelers. They also tend to be lighter. They are prone to punctures, so you will need to have a repair kit and spare inner tube on hand.
Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and Venicci Carbo Lux are among our favorite 3-wheelers. These buggies, according to MFM's Kath, have larger wheels which she claims "perform well on gravel roads, grass and market town cobbles", and can easily move up and down kerbs. The buggies also come with suspensions that, according to Kath "smooths out bumps extremely effectively".
Buggies with bigger wheels can be quite wide and may struggle to fit into narrow spaces. This can be problematic if you intend to use it as a jogger or you need to get through doorways that are narrow when on the move. Most models come with small folding options that let you remove the front wheels and store them more compactly.
Easy to Manoeuvre
A three-wheeler can be more maneuverable for children. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels turn on a dime, and are easy to navigate, making them ideal for challenging terrain such as cobblestones, parks, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3-wheeler with her newborn and toddler and said: "The Terrain was a pleasure to navigate over the rough ground, with the swivel front wheel particularly useful. I was also impressed with the way it handled kerbs, especially when using the brake operated by hand. I found it extremely stable when driving downhill or over uneven ground."
The only drawback to this great maneuverability is that the three wheel buggy's larger wheels sometimes mean that it will struggle in tight spaces - something to consider when you live in a metropolitan area. If this is a problem, a 4-wheeled buggy may be the better option for you.
